SEDRIS™ Technology Conference 2001
Plenary Session

The Plenary Session was a focal point where leading figures in the field shared their views on how the application of cutting-edge environmental technologies are shaping the future. Invited speakers, along with an update on the state of SEDRIS and other related technologies, rounded out the plenary session.

Welcome
Farid Mamaghani, Conference Chair, SEDRIS
Farid Mamaghani welcomed the attendees, and identified the Conference Committee members. He then identified and discussed the collaborative efforts of the SEDRIS Core Team and the SEDRIS Associate member organizations that have worked together to develop the SEDRIS technologies. Farid concluded his remarks by describing the Plenary Session agenda, and then introducing each of the invited speakers as it came time for them to deliver their presentations.

Perspectives on Simulation Technology
Gilman Louie, President and Chief Executive Officer, In-Q-Tel
Gilman Louie discussed why simulation is important to entertainment, Industry, National Defense, and location-based services. He provided examples of how In-Q-Tel discovers innovative technologies that apply to the commercial world, which also have applications for Defense and National Security. Gilman also addressed the differences between gaming and simulation environments, and emphasized how the Defense Industry desires technolgies that are commercially-developed, initially, thereby reducing the Government's technology entry fees.

Lead, Integrate and Leverage M&S for the Warfighter
Colonel Wm. Forrest Crain, U.S. Army, Director, Defense Modeling and Simulation Office (DMSO)
Colonel Crain discussed the DMSO Vision, and detailed the organization of DMSO. He then introduced the breadth of the Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Community, and emphasized where DMSO fits in. Colonel Crain discussed the guidance of the DoD Executive Council for Modeling and Simulation. He addressed the M&S strategic concept, what lies ahead in the future, and the enabling technolgoies that will take us there. Colonel Crain concluded his presentation by detailing how SEDRIS is a technology for Today and Tomorrow, and emphasizing to the audience the opportunities that the SEDRIS Technology Conference provides them.

Joint Synthetic Battlespace
Major Emily Andrew, U.S. Air Force, Synthetic Environments Branch Chief, Electronic Systems Center, Hanscom Air Force Base
Major Andrew discussed the increasing weapon system complexity, and emphasized that the key challenge is a correlated synthetic environment (SE), and that SEDRIS addresses that challenge. She addressed how the Joint Synthetic Battlespace (JSB) is an enabling tool for aquisition. Major Andrew then discussed multispectral sensor analysis, JSB fidelity, and the JSB conceptual model. She provided a review of sensor engineering simulations, discussed SE functional requirements, and deailed the JSB implementation approach as disciplined collaborative engineering. Major Andrew concluded her presentation by discussing the JSB near-term timeline, JSB architecture, the JSB event schedule, and JSB characteristics.

Multimedia Modeling
John Lyon, Division Director, Environmental Sciences Division, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
John Lyon defined what EPA means by multimedia modeling, emphasizing We are here to explore opportunities for research and modeling collaboration. He discussed the EPA organizational structure and, more specifically, addressed the National Exposure Research Laboratory of the EPA Environmental Sciences Division. John described the need for multimedia modeling, and emphasized through examples the challenges in integrated multimedia modeling. He continued by addressing current activities, and the Multimedia Integrated Modeling System (MIMS) framework and its goals. John concluded his presentation by discussing the modeling coupling paradigm, the benefits of the MIMS framework, and potential areas for collaboration.
