The introductory area tutorials described below were intended for anyone who is interested in gaining a better appreciation of environmental data generation and consumption issues, interested in better understanding the SEDRIS concepts, interested in international standardization, or anyone new to SEDRIS. Attendees included project managers, policy and decision makers, systems engineers, and technology managers who are impacted by environmental data.
These tutorials were designed to provide a grounded understanding of the critical issues in environmental data representation, database creation, interchange, SEDRIS capabilities and technology components, and ISO/IEC SEDRIS standardization.

Introduction to SEDRIS
Environmental data is an integral part of many of today's information technology applications. The use of environmental data will grow substantially as availability and access to such data increases, and as tools for manipulation of environmental data become less expensive and more sophisticated. This tutorial provided an overview of the fundamental issues in environmental data representation, generation, and interchange. Topics included: background on how environmental databases are created; why database creation is expensive; the impact of networking; how environmental databases affect interoperability; overview examples of the database building process; the critical issues in interchange; the need for SEDRIS; the SEDRIS approach; what SEDRIS is and is not; project status and who is involved; products and activities; an overview of the SEDRIS technology components; and more. Demonstrations of selected SEDRIS technology tools and applications were included.

SEDRIS International Standardization
In October 1999, SEDRIS began the process of establishing international standards through the combined International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This tutorial provided an overview of the international standardization process, and included a detailed description of the standards currently under development, and the current status of SEDRIS standardization.
This tutorial was for anyone who is interested in gaining a better appreciation of the international standardization process, the implications of SEDRIS standardization, or anyone new to SEDRIS. Attendees included project managers, policy and decision makers, systems engineers, and technology managers who are impacted by environmental data.
The tutorial provided the attendee with a grounded understanding of ISO, the international standardization process, and the SEDRIS standards currently under development.
