The SEDRIS Organization works in cooperation with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Joint Technical Committee 1 (ISO/IEC JTC 1) to maintain the jointly developed set of International Standards based on the SEDRIS technologies.
ISO: International Organization for Standardization (www.iso.ch) - ISO is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies established to promote the development of standardization and related activities in the world with a view to facilitating the international exchange of goods and services, and to developing cooperation in the spheres of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity.
IEC: International Electrotechnical Commission (www.iec.ch) - IEC is the international standards and conformity assessment body for all fields of electrotechnology.
JTC 1: Joint Technical Committee 1 (www.jtc1.org) - JTC 1 is the ISO/IEC committee responsible for standardization in the field of Information technology.
SC 24: SubCommittee 24 (http://isotc.iso.org/livelink/livelink?func=ll&objId=8916524&objAction=browse&sort=name) - SC 24 is the subcommittee of JTC 1 responsible for defining standards for Computer graphics, image processing and environmental data representation.
WG 8: Working Group 8 (wg8.sedris.org) - WG 8 is the working group of SC 24 responsible for defining standards for Enviromental representation.
Rationale and Incentive
The SEDRIS core technologies are firm, stable and proven means to represent environmental data (terrain, ocean, air and space), and promote the unambiguous, loss-less and non-proprietary interchange of environmental data.
Standardization of SEDRIS allowed more rigorous review of the core technologies, as well as the infusion of other perspectives, especially by the international and non-Modeling and Simulation communities.
The SEDRIS standards development activity provided increased visibility of the SEDRIS technologies, and promoted its use in citations.
ISO standardization of SEDRIS technologies was accomplished through ISO/IEC JTC 1/Sub-Committee 24. SC 24 was chosen due to their relevance, track record, interest, and business approach.
Working Group 8 was established by SC 24, and developed the following standards, based on the SEDRIS core technologies:
The SEDRIS project maintains a close working relationship with SC 24/WG 8 to ensure the evolving SEDRIS baseline and the standards maintenance activities remain in lockstep. The SEDRIS personnel responsible for this coordination are:

The development of the SEDRIS family of International Standards was undertaken by JTC 1/SC 24/WG 8 in cooperation with many other standards committees and consortia with an interest in spatial standardization. These included the SEDRIS Organization (with DMSO as its primary sponsor), ISO TC 211 (Geographic Information), the Open GIS Consortium (OGC), the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) and JTC 1/SC 32 (Data Management and Interchange).
