• Initiated in 1994 to meet environmental data interchange needs of specific programs within DARPA and the US Army

• Since 1996 - primarily sponsored by DMSO

• Managed as an open development process

• Developed on a philosophy of practical solutions built upon solid technologies using incremental prototyping and experimentation

• Core technologies heavily influenced and shaped by industry and user community participation

• Available Technology:

  • First software release in June 1996 (Release 1.0)
  • First formally supported release, January 1999 (Release 2.0)
  • Last public release, April 2001 (Release 3.0.3)

• Committed to development of formal standards
