For the purposes of this International Standard, the following definitions apply:

3.1.1 attribute

information defining part of the state of an object (see 3.1.24)

3.1.2 base quantity

one of a set of mutually independent quantities in terms of which other quantities can be defined or expressed as a product of powers of the base units and a real number [ISO 31-0:1994, 2.2.5]

3.1.3 base units

the units for the base quantities in a coherent system of units (see 3.1.7) [ISO 31-0:1994, 2.3.2.1]

3.1.4 building

a fixed structure built for human use and occupancy [APDS]

3.1.5 classification

information defining the type of an object (see 3.1.24)

3.1.6 code

a compact, non-descriptive, and not necessarily human readable designator that can be used to identify an object or aspects of that object such as its classification or attributes

3.1.7 coherent system of units

a system of units chosen in such a way that equations between numerical values (see 3.1.23) have exactly the same form (including the numerical values) as the corresponding equations between the quantities [ISO 31-0:1994, 2.3.1]

3.1.8 coherent unit

each unit in a coherent system of units (see 3.1.7) [ISO 31-0:1994, 2.3.1]

3.1.9 definition

a precise statement of the nature, properties, scope or essential qualities of a concept

3.1.10 derived units

units in a coherent system of units (see 3.1.7) that can be expressed in terms of the base units (see 3.1.3) by an algebraic expression

3.1.11 EDCS Dictionary

a set of entries of a similar nature each of which specifies a concept and includes a code, a label and a definition as well as other concept-dependent information

3.1.12 entity

an identifiable "thing" that might be of several different types

3.1.13 enumerant

each of the possible values of an enumerated data type

3.1.14 environment

a set of physical circumstances or conditions, including both natural and man-made phenomena

3.1.15 environmental representation

the act of using a set of objects (see 3.1.24) to model, simulate or describe an environment (see 3.1.14) at a level of abstraction suitable for some intended purpose

3.1.16 equivalent units

a set of units of measure that characterize the same physical quantity

3.1.17 expanse

a wide and open extent of surface, water, land, or atmosphere

3.1.18 facility

the physical means, including the buildings and equipment, required to accomplish something

3.1.19 group

one of the set of concepts that are members of an organizational schema (see 3.1.25)

3.1.20 International System of Units
SI

a coherent system of units (see 3.1.7) that includes seven base units (see 3.1.3) together with derived units (see 3.1.19) [ISO 31-0:1994, Am. 1 2.3.2]

3.1.21 label

a descriptive, human readable name that can be used to denote an object, such as its classification, or aspects of that object, such as its attributes

3.1.22 name

a string of bits or characters used for purposes of denotation of objects and aspects of objects

3.1.23 numerical value

a quantity (in the particular sense) (see 3.1.29) that can be represented by a real number

3.1.24 object

a uniquely identifiable collection of data (attributes or properties) defining its state and optional functional methods defining its behaviour

3.1.25 organizational schema

the end result of a process of characterization, a set of groups

3.1.26 parcel

a portion or piece of land, usually a division of a larger area

3.1.27 physical quantity

a quantity (see 3.1.28) that can be used in the mathematical equations of science and technology

3.1.28 quantity (in the general sense)

a property ascribed to phenomena, bodies, or substances that can be use to specify the size, amount, or extent of a particular phenomenon, body, or substance

3.1.29 quantity (in the particular sense)

a property indicating size, amount, or extent ascribed to a particular phenomenon, body, or substance

3.1.30 region

a portion of the earth's surface that is distinguished from adjacent lands by one or more characteristics or features [APDS]

3.1.31 site

the location of an object or structure, where a structure will eventually be built, or where a structure once stood [APDS]

3.1.32 state (of an object)

each of the possible modes of existence of an object as defined by the values of its attributes

3.1.33 station

a place where a phenomenon can be observed and studied in its normal or natural environment [APDS]

3.1.34 structure
