Mean Signal Excess is computed using the sonar equation
Where
- LS – tonal source level for passive and projector source level for active
- NW – transmission loss to the target
- Le - self noise (zero for sonobuoys)
- LN – total ambient noise (shipping, wind, rain, turbulence)
- NRD – recognition differential (detection threshold)
- NTS – target strength
- LR – total reverberation (bottom ? surface ? volume)
The underlying physical model for all acoustic sensor types is the same. This will ensure consisted results across sensor types.
