Browsing the EDCS ‘Specification”for a Specific Concept
- Determine the concept to identify with an EDCS label (ex: “TREE”)
- Open the EDCS Specification (HTML index)
- Search the list of classification codes alphabetically:
- Select Table 5.4 in Clause 5 (“EDCS Classifications”)
- Look at ECs that begin with “T”; 3 “TREE” related items found:
- TREE: An individual woody-perennial <PLANT>, having a self-supporting main stem or trunk and a definite crown; a tree or tree-like plant.
- TREED_TRACT: A <TRACT> covered by a group of woody-perennial <PLANT>s having a self-supporting main stem or trunk; a copse, thicket, or <TREE> stand; a treed tract.
- TREELINE: A relatively linear arrangement of <TREE>s; a treeline.
- Search by GROUP:
- Select Table 8.6 in Clause 8 (“EDCS Organizational Schema”)
- Look for a GROUP that might include the feature “TREE”; the group “PLANT” found
- Look at the classifications listed under “PLANT”; 5 “TREE” related items found
- FOREST,
- FOREST_PRESERVE,
- TREE,
- TREED_TRACT, and
- TREELINE
- Read the concept definition of each of these classifications to choose desired “TREE” feature
