• Determine the required attributes to characterize the feature (ex: “TREE”)
  • stem diameter, tree type, height, etc.

• Open the EDCS Specification (HTML index)

• Search the list of attribute codes alphabetically for desired attributes:
  • Select Table 6.4 in Clause 6 (“EDCS Attributes”)
  • Look at EAs that relate to required attributes

• Search by Group:
  • Select Table 8.6 in Clause 8 (“EDCS Organizational Schema”)
  • Look for a GROUP that might include the feature “TREE”; the group “PLANT” found
  • Look at the attributes listed under “PLANT”; 6 “TREE” related items found
    • MEAN_STEM_DIAMETER,
    • TREE_SPACING,
    • TREE_CANOPY_BOTTOM_HEIGHT,
    • TREE_CANOPY_LEVEL_COUNT, and
    • TREE_TYPE

• Read the concept definition of each of these attributes to choose desired “Tree” characteristics
